Beaded Calico Corn

Beaded Calico Corn:

This was the lesson I taught. We made corn out of pipecleaners and beads, as well as a Thanksgiving themed placemat. To start, we read a book about being thankful and discussed how different people celebrate Thanksgiving. Then, I went over pattern and we did a pre-assessment to practice creating pattern with letters and shapes. When we made the corn, at least two strands had to have a different pattern. The placemat was also required to have two different patterns. The students also got to have a sugar cookie at the end of the lesson.
Extension Activity: This lesson was partially focused on how different cultures celebrate Thanksgiving in the U.S. For the extension activity, we could research different cultures in the U.S.--possibly find and watch videos on how those cultures celebrate the holiday. The students could then compare that to how their families celebrate and have a discussion.
